The modern distillery, opened in 2017, takes the history seriously: the visitor centre tells the story well and the whisky itself (MCDXCIV, the inaugural expression) is a solid, malt-forward Lowland. More significant historically than for the whisky alone, but the spirit is improving.

Lindores Abbey Distillery is at the ruins of Lindores Abbey near Newburgh on the south bank of the Tay. Newburgh is a small Fife town with limited accommodation; Cupar (8 miles) and Perth (15 miles) are better bases. Dundee (12 miles east, over the Tay Bridge) has city accommodation. The abbey ruins are 12th century and free to visit.

Kingsbarns
