Status
Owned by Innis & Gunn (acquired 2021)

One of Scotland's oldest and most decorated craft breweries. Harviestoun has been making beer at the foot of the Ochil Hills since 1985 — long before 'craft beer' was a marketing term. Bitter & Twisted is their flagship: a blonde ale that's won more awards than any other Scottish beer, including CAMRA's Champion Beer of Britain. Schiehallion (a craft lager) and Old Engine Oil (a viscous, black porter) are equally excellent. Harviestoun's approach is unfashionable in the best sense — they perfect existing styles rather than chasing trends. No tap room currently, but widely available across Scotland in both cask and bottle.

Our verdict

Scotland's most-decorated cask brewery. Bitter & Twisted has been on the CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain podium more than any other Scottish beer. Schiehallion is the cask-conditioned lager that even cask-sceptics drink. The Ola Dubh whisky-cask aged series is unique. Now owned by Innis & Gunn but operationally intact.

Tasting the flagship: Bitter & Twisted (4.2%)

aroma

Bright citrus and fresh hop. Light grassy notes; pale-malt sweetness underneath. The trademark Harviestoun nose.

palate

Crisp, dry, hop-forward. Lemon and grapefruit zest, soft biscuit malt, a clean bitter snap. Drinks lighter than the 4.2% suggests.

finish

Long, dry, hop-bitter. The 'twisted' part of the name — bitterness lingers more than the body would suggest.

How it’s brewed

Brewing philosophy

Cask-conditioned beer is the priority. Even Schiehallion lager goes through cask conditioning — unusual but flavour-defining.

Brewery size

Established craft — ~15,000 hl/year

Annual output

~2.6 million pints

Notable ingredients

Maris Otter and Optic malts. Challenger and Styrian Golding hops on Bitter & Twisted. Highland Park whisky casks for the Ola Dubh series.

Speciality
  • Cask ale
  • Cask-conditioned lager
  • Whisky-cask aged series

Head brewer

Stuart Cail
22 years at Harviestoun Brewery

Brewer since the early 2000s — responsible for the consistency of Bitter & Twisted across two decades and the development of the Ola Dubh series.

Approach: Cask-conditioned excellence above all. The Schiehallion lager is cask-conditioned (rare) and proves the format works beyond ales.

Insider tips
  • Bitter & Twisted on supermarket can is decent. Bitter & Twisted on cask in a properly-kept Edinburgh free house (The Bow Bar, The Cumberland) is a different beer — go to the source.
  • Schiehallion is one of the few cask-conditioned lagers in the UK. If you find it on cask, try it before keg or can — the difference is significant.
  • Ola Dubh ages well — bottles cellared for 2-3 years develop more sherry-influenced notes from the Highland Park casks. Buy two, drink one, store one.
  • Innis & Gunn ownership hasn't changed the brewing — the same brewers are still on-site at Alva. The recipes and process are unchanged.

Best time to visit

Harviestoun has no public tap room — the best Bitter & Twisted experience is at a CAMRA pub of the year in central Scotland. Combine the brewery industrial visit with a stay in Stirling or Edinburgh.

Weather: Not relevant — no public visitor space at the brewery.

Harviestoun Brewery FAQ

+Can I visit Harviestoun brewery?

No — Harviestoun is wholesale-focused with no public tap room or regular tours. The best experience is finding Bitter & Twisted or Schiehallion on cask at a well-kept Edinburgh free house (The Bow Bar, The Cumberland, The Guildford Arms are all reliable).

+Is Harviestoun still independent?

No — Harviestoun was acquired by Innis & Gunn in 2021. Brewing continues at Alva with the same brewers and recipes.

+Where's the best place to drink Bitter & Twisted?

On cask at any CAMRA-recognised Scottish pub. The Bow Bar (Edinburgh), The Pot Still (Glasgow), and Settle Inn (Stirling) all serve it consistently.

+What's the Ola Dubh series?

Harviestoun's Old Engine Oil porter aged in Highland Park whisky casks. Released in different age statements (12-year, 16-year, 18-year) reflecting the whisky cask provenance. Bottle-conditioned and improves with cellaring.
