Scotland’s only triple-distilled single malt, producing notably light and delicate spirit. A 10-minute drive from Glasgow and easily the most accessible distillery visit for city-break tourists.

Our verdict

Auchentoshan is Scotland's only triple-distilled single malt and the most accessible distillery to Glasgow — 10 minutes from the city by car or bus. The triple distillation creates an unusually light, delicate spirit that often reads more like Irish whiskey than Scotch: smooth, floral, and low in oils. The 12 Year Old and Three Wood (bourbon, oloroso, Pedro Ximénez) are the picks. The modern visitor centre is well run.

Core range

American Oak (NAS)

40% ABV · First-fill American oak ex-bourbon

£28

Triple-distilled Lowland — exceptionally light, almost in Irish-whiskey territory. Cheap and approachable but not the most-rewarding bottle in the range.

Nose:
Vanilla, citrus, fresh fruit, soft cereal.
Palate:
Clean and light — vanilla, lemon, soft oak.
Finish:
Short to medium, clean.

12 Year Old

40% ABV · American oak ex-bourbon + ex-sherry

£38

Better value than the American Oak. Triple distillation gives a smoothness that some drinkers love, others find characterless.

Nose:
Vanilla, soft toffee, dried fruit, gentle oak.
Palate:
Sweet and clean — vanilla, citrus, faint sherry, soft oak.
Finish:
Medium, sweet, clean.

Three Wood

43% ABV · American oak, oloroso sherry, then PX sherry

£50

The richest Auchentoshan — sherry-heavy finish gives the light Lowland spirit some heft. Many drinkers' preferred bottle in the range.

Nose:
Rich sherry, dried fruit, oak, faint chocolate.
Palate:
Sweet and layered — sherry, raisin, oak, faint baking spice.
Finish:
Medium-long, sherry-sweet.

Character & reputation

Distinctive among Scottish distilleries for triple distillation, which is documented as producing a light, soft, unpeated house style with vanilla and citrus notes. The American Oak expression is widely recommended as an accessible, entry-level single malt, often available under £30. Best for beginners and anyone wanting a gentle, peat-free introduction to single malt.

Frequently asked questions

+Is Auchentoshan really triple distilled?

Yes — it's Scotland's only triple-distilled single malt. This produces a lighter, cleaner spirit than the standard double distillation used by virtually every other Scottish distillery.

+How do I get there from Glasgow?

Bus 10 from Glasgow city centre, or drive 15 minutes via the A82. Dalmuir train station is a 20-minute walk.

+Does triple distillation make it better?

Different, not necessarily better. It strips more congeners for a very clean, delicate spirit. Some whisky drinkers love it; others prefer more weight and complexity.

+Where is Auchentoshan distillery?

Auchentoshan is in the Lowlands. Postcode G81.

Compare with similar distilleries

Similar accessibility to visitors as Glengoyne. Spirit style closer to Irish whiskey than typical Scotch — compare to Teeling or Redbreast in character if not geography.
