A Fort William distillery under the shadow of Britain’s highest mountain, owned by Japanese Nikka since 1989. Full-bodied, slightly funky, and a whisky-nerd favourite for independent bottlings.

Our verdict

Ben Nevis is Fort William's whisky — produced in the shadow of Britain's highest mountain and owned since 1989 by Nikka (Japan's Asahi). Full-bodied and slightly funky, it has a distinctive rugged character unlike polished Speyside or light Lowland. The 10 Year Old is the entry point and an underrated gem; the indie bottlings from Gordon & MacPhail can be extraordinary. Very popular in Japan.

Sherry, dried fruit, oak, faint nutty malt.
