Every dog-friendly-Edinburgh list on the internet has the same problem: it's hearsay. Someone took their spaniel somewhere in 2023, a blog copied it, three more copied the blog, and by the time you've walked across town the pub has new owners and a "no dogs" sign. So this list works the other way round. Every venue here states its dog policy on its own website, and we checked each one on the date at the top of this page. It's a shorter list than the copy-paste ones — that's the point.

The honest context first: plenty of Edinburgh pubs welcome dogs and simply never say so online, especially the older locals. The traditional rule of thumb holds — flagstones and a fire usually means dogs aye, carpet and a children's menu means phone first. When a pub's website says nothing, a phone call takes thirty seconds and beats a turnaround at the door with a wet dog.

Moonwake Beer Co Taproom — the Shore, Leith

Leith's award-winning taproom on the Shore says it plainly: the taproom and the beer garden are dog-friendly, the whole space is fully wheelchair accessible, and it's family-friendly until 6pm. The beer is brewed metres from your table, the Shore is one of the best waterside dog walks in the city, and Leith has quietly become Scotland's densest craft-beer neighbourhood — so a dog-led afternoon here plans itself. One practical note from their own site: it's a card-only venue.

Campervan Brewery Taproom — Jane Street, Leith

Ten minutes' walk from Moonwake and the same warm answer: "we're child and dog friendly", straight from the taproom page. Campervan's taproom at 112 Jane Street is the more industrial, sit-among-the-tanks experience of the two — brewery first, bar second, usually with a food truck or pizza on. Doing both taprooms in one Leith wander with the dog is the best cheap afternoon out in the east of the city.

Cold Town House — the Grassmarket

The big one for visitors, because it solves the hard case: a proper dog-friendly option in the touristy heart of town with a castle view. Cold Town House is explicit and usefully specific on its own site — dog-friendly in the Brewhouse floor and the rooftop terrace, "well behaved pups welcome". That floor-by-floor detail is exactly what a published dog policy should look like, and it means you know before you climb the stairs which bits of the building are yours. The rooftop, with Edinburgh Castle filling the skyline, is one of the best places in the city to have a beer with a dog at your feet.

The ones that don't say

Some of the city's best beer rooms — the Leith and Southside bars every beer person will recommend to you — publish no dog policy at all, and a few of Edinburgh's most famous "dog-friendly" pubs exist only on those copy-paste lists. We're not going to launder hearsay into a recommendation: if it's not on this list, it doesn't mean no, it means ask. Policies also come with conditions everywhere — quiet dogs, off the furniture, not at the food service — and a busy Friday night is a different room from a wet Tuesday afternoon, for you and the dog both.
