Glasgow likes to call itself the friendliest city in Scotland, and its pubs extend the claim to dogs — but "everyone says it's dog-friendly" and "the pub says it's dog-friendly" are different classes of information, and only one of them survives a change of management. So this list holds itself to one rule: every venue on it states its dog policy on its own website, checked on the date at the top of the page. Short and verified beats long and copied.

The wider truth still applies here more than anywhere: a huge number of Glasgow bars take dogs and never bother saying so online. If a place isn't listed below, that's not a no — it's a thirty-second phone call.

Drygate Brewery — Dennistoun, and the gold standard

Drygate doesn't just allow dogs, it caters for them: pooches welcome inside or out, staff who'll bring a water bowl unprompted, and — their words — a dog menu. That's the strongest published dog policy of any bar we checked in either city. The brewery-hall setting beside the Tennent's works gives you space, the beer is brewed on site, and the terrace is one of the east end's best afternoons. If you only take your dog to one Glasgow bar, it's this one.

Inn Deep — Kelvinbridge

Inn Deep's website has a whole page titled "dugs of Inn Deep" — a gallery of its canine regulars — which tells you the policy and the culture in one. The bar sits in the arches down on the Kelvin walkway, which means the dog walk and the destination are the same piece of geography: along the river through the West End, down the steps, pint. On a dry day the riverside tables are as good as Glasgow outdoor drinking gets.

Stravaigin — Gibson Street, West End

Stravaigin's café bar describes itself as "a dog-friendly home from home", and after three decades on Gibson Street it has earned the wording. This is the list's option for when the dog day includes proper eating — it's one of the West End's enduring kitchens, with the bar side relaxed enough that a dog under the table is part of the furniture. Kelvingrove Park is at the end of the street for before or after.

Church on the Hill — Southside

The Southside's entry, up by Queen's Park: Church on the Hill leads its own site with "dog friendly" — right alongside the pub quiz and the under-18s policy — a bar and restaurant "for locals, ran by locals" in a converted church. Queen's Park is Glasgow's best Southside dog walk, and this is its natural finishing line.

The ones that don't say

Several famously "dog-friendly" Glasgow pubs publish nothing about it, and some much-copied lists include bars whose sites are silent or long out of date. We checked more venues than appear here and left out everything we couldn't verify — including a same-named bar in Wales that turns up when you search for one Glasgow pub, whose "no dogs inside" policy has probably confused a few readers of lazier lists. If your local takes dogs and says so on its site, it'll make this page at the next check.
