Glenfarclas
Full Speyside food & drink guide — distilleries, restaurants, where to stay, when to go.
Our sister site TripSCOT covers the visit side — opening hours, getting there, family-friendly notes. We cover the whisky.
One of the few remaining family-owned Speyside distilleries, still in the hands of the Grant family after six generations. Famous for sherry-cask whisky at fair prices, especially the 15 and 25.
Glenfarclas is the benchmark of independent, family-owned Speyside whisky — six generations of the Grant family, no corporate interference, and a commitment to sherry-cask maturation that produces some of the best-value aged Speyside malts available. The Family Casks series (single sherry casks from every year back to 1952) is a unique offering. The 15 and 21 Year Olds are outstanding at their prices.

Core range
10 Year Old
40% ABV · Mix of refill and first-fill sherry casks
Underpriced for what it is. Pure sherry-cask Speyside at half the cost of Macallan 12.
- Nose:
- Christmas cake, dried fruit, faint smoke, oak.
- Palate:
- Sherry sweetness without weight — raisin, soft spice, biscuit.
- Finish:
- Medium, drying, faintly nutty.
15 Year Old
46% ABV · Sherry casks — predominantly first-fill oloroso
Bottled at 46% non-chill-filtered — most consider it the value sweet spot in the entire sherry-cask category. Better than Macallan 12 Sherry Oak at the price.
- Nose:
- Dried fruit, dark chocolate, oak, faint orange peel.
- Palate:
- Concentrated sherry, dark fruit, oak spice, dry cocoa.
- Finish:
- Long, drying, peppery.
105 Cask Strength
60% ABV · First-fill sherry casks
60% ABV sherry-bomb at a bargain price. The classic cask-strength Speyside; add water to taste rather than try it neat at first.
- Nose:
- Intense — sherry, dried fruit, dark chocolate, alcohol heat.
- Palate:
- Big sherry punch, oak tannin, brown sugar, drying spice.
- Finish:
- Long and warming, drying oak.
Food pairings

+Is Glenfarclas still family-owned?
Yes — six generations of the Grant family have owned the distillery since 1865. It's one of the last truly independent Speyside distilleries.
+What is the Family Casks series?
Single cask expressions from every year going back to 1952 — a complete vertical library of Glenfarclas. Individual casks are bottled at cask strength.
+What is the 105?
The 105 is Glenfarclas's cask strength expression (105° proof in old money, approximately 60% ABV). It's consistently excellent value for a cask-strength sherried Speyside.
+Where is Glenfarclas distillery?
Glenfarclas is in Speyside. Postcode AB37.
Compare with similar distilleries
Most similar to GlenDronach for sherry-cask intensity and independent ownership philosophy. More consistent than Macallan at comparable price points.
The Macallan
The most valuable single malt brand in the world. Famous for sherry-cask maturation and, increasingly, for price inflation. The architecturally-stunning visitor centre is worth a visit on its own merits.
GlenDronach
A sherry-cask powerhouse, often spoken of alongside Macallan and Glenfarclas but at notably fairer prices. The 15 Revival in particular has a cult following.
