Home to the tallest stills in Scotland — nearly five metres — which produces a notably light, fragrant spirit. Glenmorangie is one of the best-selling single malts in Scotland full stop.

Our verdict

Glenmorangie is Scotland's top-selling single malt domestically — the distillery of the tallest stills in Scotland, producing a characteristically light, fragrant, bourbon-cask-forward spirit that is unusually easy to love. The Original (10 Year Old) is the classic; the cask finish range (Lasanta, Quinta Ruban, Nectar D'Or) explores sherry, port, and Sauternes respectively. The Signet (high-roast chocolate malt) is outstanding.

Core range

Original (10 Year Old)

40% ABV · American oak ex-bourbon, second-fill

£38

Famously the tallest stills in Scotland produce one of the lightest, fruitiest Highland malts. The benchmark unpeated Highland 10.

Nose:
Citrus, vanilla, soft fruit, light oak.
Palate:
Fresh and clean — vanilla, peach, mandarin, soft oak.
Finish:
Medium, clean, faintly fruity.

Lasanta (Sherry Cask)

43% ABV · American oak then oloroso + PX sherry finish

£52

Sherry-finished Glenmorangie — Highland fruit weighed down by sherry sweetness. Good introduction to sherry-cask whisky.

Nose:
Sherry, raisin, oak, faint chocolate.
Palate:
Sweet and rich — sherry, dried fruit, oak, baking spice.
Finish:
Medium-long, sweet, drying gently.

Quinta Ruban (Port Cask)

46% ABV · American oak then ruby port pipes

£55

Port-cask finish creates a port-wine berry character distinct from sherry finishes. Bottled at 46% — gets you more weight than the standard range.

Nose:
Dark fruit, oak, faint chocolate, mint.
Palate:
Berry-driven — port sweetness, oak spice, faint citrus.
Finish:
Medium-long, drying, faint cocoa.

18 Year Old

43% ABV · American oak + ~30% sherry-aged

£130

Older Highland Glenmorangie. Less aggressive than younger sherried whiskies — long oak ageing has rounded everything off.

Nose:
Mature oak, soft sherry, dried fruit, vanilla.
Palate:
Layered — oak spice, sherry, soft fruit, gentle honey.
Finish:
Long, drying, faintly fruity.

Frequently asked questions

+What makes the tall stills special?

The taller a still, the more copper contact the vapour has, removing heavier, oilier compounds and creating a lighter, purer spirit. Glenmorangie's stills at 5.14 metres are the tallest in Scotland.

+Which expression should I start with?

The Original (10 Year Old) is the essential starting point. If you want more richness, go to Lasanta (sherry finish) or Quinta Ruban (port finish).

+Where is Glenmorangie distillery?

Glenmorangie is in north highland, in the Highlands. Postcode IV19.

+When was Glenmorangie distillery founded?

Glenmorangie was founded in 1843, making it roughly 183 years old.

Compare with similar distilleries

The Original is most comparable to Glenfiddich 12 and Glenlivet 12 for accessible, bourbon-forward Speyside character. The cask finish range is more ambitious.
