Built on the site of Lindores Abbey, home to the earliest documented whisky making in Scotland (a 1494 Exchequer Roll entry for Friar John Cor). The modern distillery opened in 2017 and produces a light, honeyed style — the tour includes the abbey ruins.

Our verdict

Lindores Abbey Distillery stands on the site of the earliest documented record of Scotch whisky production — a 1494 Exchequer Roll entry for Friar John Cor at Lindores. The modern distillery, opened in 2017, takes the history seriously: the visitor centre tells the story well and the whisky itself (MCDXCIV, the inaugural expression) is a solid, malt-forward Lowland. More significant historically than for the whisky alone, but the spirit is improving.
