Two styles: Tobermory is unpeated; Ledaig is heavily peated (30-40 ppm)

The only distillery on Mull, operating since 1798 on the harbour of colourfully painted Tobermory. Unusually runs two brands from the same stills — unpeated Tobermory and heavily peated Ledaig — produced in alternating seasonal campaigns.

Our verdict

Tobermory is Mull's distillery — on the harbour of the colourfully painted village, operating since 1798 under two brand names from the same stills. Tobermory (unpeated) is oily and coastal; Ledaig (peated) is bold and maritime. The distillery is beautifully sited and a natural stop on any Mull visit. The 12 Tobermory and 10 Ledaig are both excellent. A proper island distillery with a proper island character.

Core range

Tobermory 12 (unpeated)

Tobermory makes both unpeated (Tobermory) and peated (Ledaig) spirit. The 12 is the unpeated Mull expression — gentle island malt.

Nose:
Soft fruit, vanilla, oak, gentle salt.
Palate:
Light — fruit, vanilla, oak, faint coastal note.
Finish:
Medium, clean.

Ledaig 10 (peated)

46.3% ABV · Bourbon casks

£50

Mull's heavily-peated expression. Distinctive ashy, almost meaty smoke — different from Islay peat in character.

Nose:
Peat, smoke, oak, soft salt.
Palate:
Big peat — smoke, oily malt, oak, gentle sweetness.
Finish:
Long, smoky, drying.

Ledaig is closest to a maritime, medium-peated Talisker. Tobermory (unpeated) is distinctive — oilier than most Lowlands, more coastal than most Speyside.
