Unpeated; the Morven range is lightly peated

Scotland's most northerly mainland distillery, built in 2013 a few hundred metres from the site of the original Wolfburn (which closed in the 1860s). Small team, hand-operated, and rarely gets the attention of the big-name Highlands — worth the diversion if you're already in Thurso.

Our verdict

Wolfburn is Scotland's most northerly mainland distillery — opened 2013 near Thurso, it's a small team producing elegant, light Highland spirit with a developing reputation. The Aurora (bourbon cask) is the accessible entry; the Morven (sherry cask, lightly peated) is the more complex expression. Very much a discovery distillery for those exploring the far north.

Where to stay near Wolfburn

Wolfburn is the northernmost whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland, in Thurso, Caithness. Thurso is the ferry town for Orkney (Northlink Ferries to Stromness). The town has a handful of hotels and guesthouses. Wick (20 miles east) has Old Pulteney and similar accommodation. This is a genuine end-of-the-road destination — embrace the remoteness.
