Edinburgh Farmers’ Market

Last updated 15 May 2026

Scotland's biggest and most established farmers market, running every Saturday on Castle Terrace since 1999. Expect 40-60 stallholders selling everything from East Lothian vegetables and Borders lamb to artisan cheese, sourdough bread, smoked fish, and seasonal game. The atmosphere is busy but not overwhelming — arrive by 10am for the best selection. Street food stalls serve hot breakfast rolls and coffee. The market runs year-round regardless of weather, though the range naturally shifts with the seasons.

Visitor tips

  • Arrive before 11am — Crombie's and IJ Mellis queue out by midday.
  • Bring a cool bag for cheese and fish, especially in summer. Stalls have paper bags but they don't keep dairy cold on the walk back to a hotel or station.
  • If you're coming from Waverley, walk down Lothian Road rather than through Princes Street Gardens — quicker and you pass several whisky/gin shops worth a stop.
  • The market is busy with tourists in August — go in May, June, October, or November if you want elbow room.
  • Combine with breakfast at the Cafe Royal or Hula on Princes Street, then the Royal Mile after.
