Edinburgh Food Festival
The best free food festival in Scotland. Compact, city-centre, and strong on Scottish producers — cheese, charcuterie, baking, street food, and a good drinks selection. Runs for 4–5 days in George Square Gardens during Edinburgh's festival season. Less hectic than the Royal Highland Show, more accessible than rural festivals. Go on a weekday for a less crowded experience. No booking required.

Edinburgh's summer food festival is mostly free entry — a city-centre festival village in George Square Gardens with 30+ food and drink stalls, free demos, and ticketed masterclasses. Smaller and less rural-feeling than the Royal Highland Show, but central and easy. Brilliant lunch destination in late July when the Fringe is just kicking off.
Edinburgh in late July is unpredictable. Mostly outdoor — bring sunscreen and a waterproof.

Genuinely free, genuinely good, and genuinely central. Most Edinburgh visitors do the Fringe and miss this. Pop in at lunchtime — eat your way through the stalls, watch a demo, leave well-fed for £15. The masterclasses are worth booking but the basic festival is free.
