A small Royal Deeside distillery near Banchory working deliberately against industry practice — heritage and darkly roasted barleys, a wash at roughly double the usual strength, and very slow, low-temperature distillation. Its business today is contract distilling, cask sales and independent bottling; the first bottles under its own name are due in 2027.
Burnobennie is the most contrarian distillery in the north-east and says so on every page: the industry chases yield, it chases flavour. That means Golden Promise and home-smoked barleys with crystal and chocolate malts rather than a single high-yield modern strain, a 13% ABV wash against an industry-standard 7-8%, and distillation held at around 20°C — its analogy is simmering a soup rather than boiling it. Charles MacLean has said on the record that he took its 18-month spirit for an 18 to 20-year-old, which is the kind of quote a new distillery cannot buy. Founded in 2019 in Aberdeenshire, it now runs four lines of business: contract distilling to a client's spec, independent bottling, new-make casks and bonded warehousing, and bespoke private-label bottling.
How it’s made
Darkly roasted and heritage barleys — Golden Promise, home-smoked malts, crystal and chocolate malts — rather than a single yield-selected variety. Wash fermented to around 13% ABV, close to double the industry norm, sacrificing yield for flavour and cutting water and energy use. Super-slow distillation at around 20°C to preserve aromatics. The distillery states an 80/20 split of spirit to cask influence, deliberately the reverse of the industry's.

No — Burnobennie publishes no tours, shop or opening hours on its own site (checked 15 September 2026). It is a working production and bottling business near Banchory, and its public routes in are contract distilling, cask purchase and bespoke bottling enquiries.
