Founded
1832
Owner
Loch Lomond Group
Region
campbeltown
Style
complex briny
Peat
Lightly peated (around 12–15 ppm)

One of the last three surviving distilleries in Campbeltown and a genuine whisky-geek favourite. Complex, coastal, lightly peated, and increasingly hard to ignore even in the shadow of neighbouring Springbank.

Our verdict

Glen Scotia is Campbeltown's hidden gem — the second distillery in a three-distillery town (Springbank, Glen Scotia, Glengyle), complex, coastal, and increasingly acclaimed. The 15 Year Old is an outstanding expression: maritime, lightly peated, with a briny depth that marks Campbeltown whisky out from every other region. Double Cask and Victoriana are also excellent. Worth seeking out.

Character & reputation

Glen Scotia, founded in 1832 as Scotia, is one of only three surviving distilleries in Campbeltown, alongside Springbank and Glengyle. It is owned by the Loch Lomond Group, which took over in 2014 and invested in capacity, warehousing and the visitor centre. Unlike many blend-focused malts it is known chiefly for its own official single malts, including a well-regarded 15 year old and the cask-strength Victoriana. The documented house style is a lightly peated, maritime Campbeltown character of brine, toffee and restrained smoke. Among enthusiasts its reputation has risen markedly since the mid-2010s, helped by competition awards. The distillery also carries a much-repeated ghost legend tied to former owner Duncan MacCallum, who drowned around 1930.
