A workhorse Chivas distillery for its first 50 years until veteran distiller Billy Walker (ex-GlenDronach, BenRiach) acquired it in 2017 and launched it as a premium single malt. Heavy sherry-cask maturation and aggressive cask-strength releases have turned it into one of the most hype-heavy new independents.
GlenAllachie has become one of Scotland's most talked-about distilleries since Billy Walker (ex-BenRiach) took over in 2017. The core range has been rebuilt around exceptional cask quality — a huge range of sherry and wine cask types, plus first-fill bourbon. The 10 Year Old is one of the best-value complex malts in Scotland. Walker's cask management skills are evident in every expression.

Sherry-led with extensive cask-finish experimentation. The Billy Walker hand has produced a more characterful, bigger-bodied Speyside than the previous Pernod Ricard era — full sherry richness with frequent finishes adding fruit and wood complexity.

Independent since 2017 when Billy Walker (formerly of GlenDronach and BenRiach) led a buyout from Pernod Ricard. Since then GlenAllachie has gone from a blender's malt to one of Speyside's most respected single malt brands — heavy use of cask finishes and a focus on age-statement releases under 20 years old.
Deep dive review
Independent since 2017 when Billy Walker took over, GlenAllachie has gone from a forgettable blender's malt to one of Speyside's most respected single malt brands in less than a decade. The whole core range is sherry-cask led, properly bottled at 46%, and priced fairly compared to the bigger sherry names. The 15 is the standout — a genuine sub-£90 alternative to the Macallan/GlenDronach end of the market. Best for sherry-cask devotees, Billy Walker fans, and anyone who wants to back a rising-star independent.
Food pairings
GlenAllachie's sherry-led, full-bodied style suits rich, slow-cooked food and aged hard cheeses.
| Whisky | Food | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 12 Year Old | Charcuterie board with aged cheese | Sherry character handles cured meats well |
| 15 Year Old | Sticky toffee pudding | Sherried sweetness meets caramelised sugar |
| 18 Year Old | Aged Stilton or rich slow-cooked beef | Big sherry handles big food |
- Independent since 2017 — Billy Walker turned it from a blender malt to a serious single malt brand fast
- GlenAllachie's hand-fill programme is one of the most generous in Speyside
- The 15 is the standout in the core range — a genuine sub-£90 sherry classic
- Combine with Aberlour and Glenfarclas for a strong Aberlour-area sherry day
- Billy Walker masterclasses (when available) are genuinely worth the £200

+Who is Billy Walker?
Billy Walker is the master blender and co-owner who acquired GlenAllachie from Pernod Ricard in 2017. Previously he led GlenDronach and BenRiach in a similar revival role. One of the most respected blenders in modern Scotch.
+Is GlenAllachie sherry-cask whisky?
Predominantly yes — GlenAllachie's house style under Billy Walker is heavily sherry-cask led, with extensive use of oloroso and PX casks plus wine-cask finishes.
+How do you pronounce GlenAllachie?
"Glen-AL-ack-ee" — emphasis on the second syllable. Gaelic origin.
+Is GlenAllachie wheelchair accessible?
Yes — visitor centre and main tour route are accessible.
+How does GlenAllachie compare to GlenDronach?
Both Billy Walker projects, both heavily sherry-led. GlenDronach is bigger and slightly older as a single malt brand. GlenAllachie is the more recent revival and often slightly better value at the entry-level.
Compare with similar distilleries
GlenDronach
A sherry-cask powerhouse, often spoken of alongside Macallan and Glenfarclas but at notably fairer prices. The 15 Revival in particular has a cult following.
Aberlour
A Speyside favourite for sherry-cask fans, best known internationally for the cask-strength A’bunadh series. Sweet, rich, and notably big-bodied for the region.
Glenfarclas
One of the few remaining family-owned Speyside distilleries, still in the hands of the Grant family after six generations. Famous for sherry-cask whisky at fair prices, especially the 15 and 25.
The Macallan
The most valuable single malt brand in the world. Famous for sherry-cask maturation and, increasingly, for price inflation. The architecturally-stunning visitor centre is worth a visit on its own merits.
