Known as ‘the Beast of Dufftown’ for its uniquely complex 2.81-times distillation regime. Big, meaty, sulphury, sherry-influenced — the polar opposite of typical ‘light Speyside’.

Our verdict

Mortlach is 'the Beast of Dufftown' — a distillery with a uniquely complex 2.81-times distillation regime that produces a heavyweight, meaty, sulphury spirit unlike anything else in Speyside. Heavy sherry maturation tames but doesn't eliminate this character, creating whisky of extraordinary depth. The 12 Wee Witchie and 16 Distiller's Dram are both outstanding. Serious whisky for serious drinkers.

Best for:experienced drinkerssherry cask fans

Core range

12 Year Old Wee Witchie

43.4% ABV · Refill and first-fill sherry casks

£60

The 'Beast of Dufftown'. 2.81 distillations give it the densest, most savoury body in Speyside — closer in style to old Glenfarclas than Glenfiddich.

Nose:
Meaty malt, dried fruit, soft sulphur, oak.
Palate:
Heavy and weighty — dried fruit, oak, meaty malt, faint mineral.
Finish:
Long and drying, peppery oak, lingering weight.

16 Year Old Distiller's Dram

43.4% ABV · European oak sherry casks

£110

Heavy old-style Speyside at a more reasonable price than the 18. Reward for sherry-heavy drinkers willing to read past the Diageo branding noise.

Nose:
Sherry, leather, oak, dried fig, faint sulphur.
Palate:
Big and meaty — sherry, oak spice, dark fruit, mineral.
Finish:
Long, drying, oak holding sherry weight.

Where to stay near Mortlach

Mortlach is at the south end of Dufftown, a 5-minute walk from the main square. Dufftown's guesthouses are small and book out during Spirit of Speyside; reserve early. The Fiddichside Inn in Craigellachie (4 miles) is a traditional option. Glenfiddich's visitor centre and the Balvenie are both walking distance, so Dufftown works as a day-one base.

Frequently asked questions

+What does '2.81 times distillation' mean?

Mortlach uses a complex distillation regime across six stills that results in each batch passing through the distillation process 2.81 times on average — more than double distillation, less than triple. It creates a heavier, more complex spirit.

+Is Mortlach very peated?

No — it's lightly peated. The distinctive character comes from the distillation regime and heavy sherry maturation, not peat.

+Is Mortlach open to visitors?

No — Mortlach is a production distillery and has no visitor centre. The nearby Diageo distilleries (Glenfiddich, Balvenie) offer full experiences in Dufftown.

+Where is Mortlach distillery?

Mortlach is in Speyside. Postcode AB55.

Compare with similar distilleries

Closer to Dalmore or GlenDronach in intensity than standard Speyside. The meaty character is unique — nothing else quite compares.
