The Glenrothes
Full Speyside food & drink guide — distilleries, restaurants, where to stay, when to go.
Long a backbone of the Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse blends, Glenrothes has steadily built a reputation as a serious sherry-cask single malt in its own right. Not currently open to visitors.
Glenrothes has built a serious single malt identity from its origins as a blending workhorse (it was the backbone of Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark for decades). The sherry-cask maturation produces a rich, spiced Speyside with orange peel and dried fruit characteristics. The Soleo Collection uses flor sherry-dried grapes to intensify the fruit character. Not currently open to visitors but widely available at retail.
Core range
12 Year Old
40% ABV · Sherry-seasoned oak
Round, accessible sherry-style Speyside. Famously rounded short bottle. Less aggressive than Macallan, less restrained than Cardhu.
- Nose:
- Vanilla, ginger, citrus, soft oak.
- Palate:
- Smooth and rounded — sweet spice, vanilla, dried fruit, oak.
- Finish:
- Medium, sweet, oak spice.
18 Year Old
43% ABV · First-fill sherry oak
Premium sherried Speyside. Often outperforms Macallan 18 in blind tastings; price reflects relative lack of brand awareness.
- Nose:
- Mature sherry, dried fig, oak, faint orange peel.
- Palate:
- Rich and layered — sherry, fig, cocoa, oak spice.
- Finish:
- Long, drying, peppery oak.

Where to stay near The Glenrothes
The Glenrothes distillery is in the town of Rothes on the A941. Rothes itself has limited accommodation, but it's well-placed between Elgin (12 miles north) and Aberlour (10 miles south). Elgin is the largest town in the area and has the full range from budget to boutique — useful if every Speyside B&B is full during the festival.

Compare with similar distilleries
Similar sherry-forward Speyside style to Aberlour and Glenfarclas but slightly lighter. More accessible than GlenDronach for drinkers new to sherry whisky.
Glenfarclas
One of the few remaining family-owned Speyside distilleries, still in the hands of the Grant family after six generations. Famous for sherry-cask whisky at fair prices, especially the 15 and 25.
GlenDronach
A sherry-cask powerhouse, often spoken of alongside Macallan and Glenfarclas but at notably fairer prices. The 15 Revival in particular has a cult following.
Aberlour
A Speyside favourite for sherry-cask fans, best known internationally for the cask-strength A’bunadh series. Sweet, rich, and notably big-bodied for the region.
Other distilleries owned by Edrington
Distilleries that share The Glenrothes's corporate parent — useful context if you're comparing house styles within an owner's stable.
Highland Park
Orkney’s northernmost Scotch distillery uses heather-infused peat and slow maturation in a famously cold island climate. Balanced, honeyed, lightly smoky.
The Macallan
The most valuable single malt brand in the world. Famous for sherry-cask maturation and, increasingly, for price inflation. The architecturally-stunning visitor centre is worth a visit on its own merits.
