Edinburgh Christmas Market
Scotland's largest Christmas market, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors across six weeks. Mix of Scottish food producers and generic Christmas market fare — quality varies hugely by stall. The Scottish producer stalls (tablet, fudge, smoked salmon, whisky, gin) are the ones worth visiting. Mulled wine and bratwurst are the atmospheric staples. Prices are 2–3x what you'd pay normally. Go for the atmosphere and lights, not the value. Much busier on weekends — weekday evenings are more pleasant.

Edinburgh Christmas Market spreads across Princes Street Gardens and East Princes Street with chalets, food stalls, rides, and a daily ice rink. Free entry, busy, and properly festive — but expensive once you start eating and riding. The setting under the Castle is genuinely lovely. Late November and early December are quieter than the festive week.
Edinburgh November–December is cold and often wet. Wrap up properly. Hot mulled wine helps.

Visit on a weekday afternoon if you can, and don't try to do everything. Combine with a free walk up the Royal Mile and you have a perfect Edinburgh festive afternoon for £30 a person.
