Speyburn

Our sister site TripSCOT covers the visit side — opening hours, getting there, family-friendly notes. We cover the whisky.
A pretty Victorian distillery in Rothes producing fresh, easy-drinking Speyside spirit. Best known for being a regular fixture on supermarket value shelves.
Speyburn is Speyside's accessible value option — fresh, easy, undemanding malt regularly found in supermarkets under £25. The 10 Year Old is honest and competent: light orchard fruit, vanilla, and a short finish. The Arranta Casks (ex-bourbon American new oak) and Bradan Orach (the NAS entry expression) are the wider range. A good everyday pour that doesn't pretend to be more.

Character & reputation
Speyburn, in a wooded glen at Rothes, was founded in 1897 by John Hopkins & Co and designed by the noted distillery architect Charles Doig, complete with his signature pagoda roof. It is owned by Inver House Distillers, part of International Beverage Holdings (Thai Beverage). Unusually it runs on a single wash still and two spirit stills despite a sizeable annual output. The official range includes 10, 15 and 18 year old expressions alongside the no-age-statement Bradan Orach. It is a strong seller in the United States and carries a documented reputation as good-value, entry-level Speyside; the house style is typically described as light, sweet and easy-drinking. The distillery is not open to visitors.

Where to stay near Speyburn
Speyburn is tucked into a wooded gorge just outside Rothes — the distillery buildings are a remarkable Victorian complex, not open for regular visitor tours. Rothes has limited accommodation; Elgin (12 miles) and Aberlour (10 miles) are better bases for this area. The gorge walk down to the distillery from the road is worth the short detour.
