One of the quieter Rothes distilleries, founded in 1878 and now producing spirit almost exclusively for J&B blended Scotch. Single malt releases are limited to the Flora & Fauna range and independent bottlings — tours are not available.

Our verdict

Glen Spey is a Diageo Rothes distillery producing light, clean spirit primarily for J&B blend. The single malt (Flora & Fauna 12 Year Old) is a decent, accessible Speyside that reveals more than its blend workhorse reputation suggests — floral, fresh, with a pleasant grassy note. Rothes has four distilleries (Glen Spey, Speyburn, Glenrothes, Caperdonich/closed) making it a concentrated whisky town.

Glen Spey is in the town of Rothes — primarily a Diageo production site not open for visitor tours. Rothes sits between Aberlour (10 miles) and Elgin (12 miles); both make better overnight bases than Rothes itself for a Speyside visit.
