Sits within sight of Balmoral Castle on Royal Deeside and was granted its Royal Warrant in 1848 after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited from the estate next door. One of Diageo's smallest distilleries — tiny output, tiny visitor centre — but easy to combine with a Balmoral day out.

Our verdict

Royal Lochnagar sits below Balmoral Castle on Royal Deeside and was granted its Royal Warrant in 1848 when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited from the estate next door. One of Scotland's smallest distilleries and one of the most scenically sited — the Lochnagar mountain views are outstanding. The Selected Reserve (no age statement, rich and complex) is the flagship expression.

Where to stay near Royal Lochnagar

Royal Lochnagar sits at the edge of the Balmoral estate near Crathie on Royal Deeside — as close to the Castle as you can get outside Balmoral itself. Ballater (3 miles east) has the Deeside Hotel and several characterful B&Bs and is the base for Royal Deeside tourism. Braemar (10 miles west) is smaller but has the Fife Arms — one of Scotland's genuinely exceptional hotel experiences.
