Dailuaine
Full Speyside food & drink guide — distilleries, restaurants, where to stay, when to go.
A large, almost hidden Speyside distillery tucked into the Carron valley by the Spey. Almost exclusively feeds Diageo's blends — Johnnie Walker especially — so single malt bottlings are rare and usually come from independent bottlers rather than the distillery itself.
Dailuaine is a large, hidden Speyside distillery tucked into the Carron valley — almost exclusively a Diageo blend component (Johnnie Walker) that rarely surfaces as a single malt. The Flora & Fauna 16 Year Old is the primary official bottling and shows a rich, fruity, heavy Speyside character. Independent bottlers occasionally get hold of casks — worth seeking out.
Core range
Flora & Fauna 16
43% ABV · Sherry-influenced
Sherry-style Speyside, mainly for Diageo blends. Flora & Fauna 16 is the rare official bottling; otherwise seek indie bottlers.
Character & reputation
Dailuaine, tucked into the Carron valley by the River Spey, was founded in 1852 by William Mackenzie and after later expansion became, for a time, the largest distillery on Speyside. It is owned by Diageo and runs at large scale. The overwhelming majority of its make goes to blending, especially Johnnie Walker, with only a small fraction set aside as single malt, so official bottlings are scarce, the best known being a Diageo Flora & Fauna 16 year old. Most other single-malt Dailuaine reaches drinkers through independent bottlers. The site is also noted historically as the first distillery fitted with Charles Doig's pagoda roof ventilator. Among enthusiasts it is an unsung, connoisseur's name; the make is typically documented as rich and sherried. It is not a visitor destination.

Where to stay near Dailuaine

Aberlour (3 miles) is the right base: the Mash Tun B&B is directly on the Speyside Way and the village has a good pub and local shops. Carron itself has no tourist infrastructure.

Compare with similar distilleries
Similar rich, fruity Speyside to Glenfarclas and Tamdhu but without the same quality focus at official bottling level.
Glenfarclas
One of the few remaining family-owned Speyside distilleries, still in the hands of the Grant family after six generations. Famous for sherry-cask whisky at fair prices, especially the 15 and 25.
Tamdhu
Quietly one of the best-value 100% sherry-cask Speysides on the market since its 2013 reboot under Ian Macleod. The 15 in particular is widely regarded as superb for the price.
Other distilleries owned by Diageo
Distilleries that share Dailuaine's corporate parent — useful context if you're comparing house styles within an owner's stable.
Lagavulin
Iconic Islay distillery on the southern shore, Lagavulin produces some of the most intensely peated, deeply maritime whisky in Scotland. The 16 Year Old is a benchmark Islay dram.
Oban
A tiny two-still distillery sitting right in the middle of the town it’s named after. Oban bridges Highland and West Coast island character — gently smoky, salty, fruity.
Cardhu
Founded by Helen Cumming and the spiritual home of Johnnie Walker, Cardhu is a smooth, easy, fruit-forward Speyside that punches well above its weight as a beginner single malt.
Cragganmore
One of Diageo’s six ‘Classic Malts’. Cragganmore is unusually complex for an entry-age Speyside thanks to its short, flat-topped stills and unique condensing setup.
Linkwood
A workhorse Diageo distillery whose spirit features in many blends but is rarely seen as an official single malt. A favourite of independent bottlers for its perfumed, floral character.
Mortlach
Known as ‘the Beast of Dufftown’ for its uniquely complex 2.81-times distillation regime. Big, meaty, sulphury, sherry-influenced — the polar opposite of typical ‘light Speyside’.
