Cathedral town on the Tay where the Highlands begin — historic, walkable and on the A9
Dunkeld is a small historic town on the River Tay, often cited as the geographical line where Lowland Scotland gives way to Highland. The ruined Dunkeld Cathedral sits in a graveyard right on the riverbank — partially roofed, partially open to the sky after the Reformation never quite finished the job. The town is on the A9 main route north (and the railway), making it a natural stopping point on the way between Edinburgh/Perth and the Highlands. Beatrix Potter spent childhood summers near here, and the Birnam Oak (across the river in Birnam) is the last surviving tree of the wood Shakespeare wrote into Macbeth. The food scene is small but considered — a couple of long-running restaurants, a hotel doing local game and venison, and an independent grocer.
