Dunfermline food & drink
Scotland's former capital, Andrew Carnegie's birthplace, with the Abbey, Pittencrieff Park and a Sunday market
Dunfermline was Scotland's capital before Edinburgh — Robert the Bruce is buried in Dunfermline Abbey, and the Abbey itself stretches back to the 11th century. The Royal Burgh became Scotland's first official 'city' in 2022 in honour of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Andrew Carnegie was born in a weaver's cottage here in 1835 — his birthplace is now a museum — and his gift to the town, Pittencrieff Park ('the Glen'), is one of the most generous urban green spaces in Scotland. The town centre runs the usual Scottish mix of high-street chains and local independents; the Dunfermline market (originally medieval, still running on Saturdays/Sundays) draws producers from across west Fife. 20 minutes by train from Edinburgh Waverley.
