Inveraray food & drink

Loch Fyne shore town with the Duke of Argyll's castle and the original Loch Fyne oyster bar

Inveraray is a planned 18th-century town on the western shore of Loch Fyne, built by the 3rd Duke of Argyll as the seat of the Clan Campbell. The Duke still lives in the fairytale-Gothic Inveraray Castle just north of the town, which is open to the public most of the year. The town itself is small — one long whitewashed terrace, the historic Inveraray Jail, the George Hotel (one of Scotland's oldest still trading), and a string of restaurants doing Loch Fyne seafood. Loch Fyne itself is the food story: oysters, mussels, langoustines and salmon are landed and farmed along its 65-km length. The original Loch Fyne Oyster Bar — the restaurant that grew into the chain — is at Cairndow, 15 minutes' drive up the loch.
