Campbeltown food & drink

Once the whisky capital of the world — three distilleries and a cult following

Campbeltown is at the southern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula, three and a half hours from Glasgow by road. Once home to over 30 distilleries — the genuine whisky capital of the world in the late 19th century — it now has three working: Springbank, Glen Scotia, and Glengyle (which produces Kilkerran). Springbank in particular has cult status among whisky enthusiasts, doing essentially everything on-site from malting through distilling to bottling — almost no other Scottish distillery still does all three. The Campbeltown Malts Festival each May draws international visitors. Beyond whisky, Campbeltown itself is a small, slightly faded harbour town — but the drive down Kintyre is part of the experience, and the food at the better local pubs and seafood restaurants reflects the working coast.
